Mr. Musa was born on the 19th day of March, 1944 in San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize, being the fourth child of Hamid and Aurora Musa.
He attended St. Andrews Primary School in San Ignacio, St. Michael’s College in Belize City and later St. John’s College Sixth Form. He read law at Manchester University England receiving an Honours Degree in 1966 and was admitted as an Honorable Member of Grays Inn in 1967. He enrolled as an Attorney-at-Law in Belize on the 4th day of February, 1970 and was appointed Senior Counsel in September of 1980.
Mr. Musa served as a Circuit Magistrate and later Crown Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before entering private practice in 1970. He was appointed Senator in 1974 and served in that capacity until 1979. He was elected a Member of the House of Representatives for the Fort George Division from 1979 to 1984 and served as Attorney General and Minister of Economic Development. He assisted in the drafting of the Belize Independence Constitution in 1981.
Mr. Musa has served in various capacities, including Belize's Governor of the Caribbean Development Bank and the IBRD (World Bank). During the period 1989 to 1993, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education, Culture and Sports. In 1996, he was elected Leader of the People’s United Party and led the party to a landslide victory in general elections in 1998. He was re-elected to serve as Prime Minister for a second five year term between 2003 and 2008.
Mr. Musa stepped down on the 13th day of February, 2008 as leader of the People’s United Party and has returned to private practice in the firm, which together with the late Lawrence Balderamos he founded in 1978.
Mr. Musa retired from electoral politics in September 2020. He served in Belize's parliament as an appointed Senator from 1974-1979, and as an elected Member of the House of Representatives: 1979-1984, 1989-1993 and 1998-2020.
